Through the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC), JMU GIVE has adopted the High Knob Fire Tower trail and a segment of the Shenandoah Mountain trail. PATC acquires, maintains, and protects the trail and lands of the Appalachian Trail, other trails, and related facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region. Maintainers will prune vegetation, clear fallen trees and branches, construct new and fix existing trail elements, and check on the trail after storms.

The Elkton Thrift Store is an amazing opportunity to support both the local community and sustainability through second-hand clothing. Currently, volunteers will be working in the thrift store warehouse to sort through clothing items that have been donated, before they are to be available in the thrift store for the general public!

Participate in a number of exciting projects, all of which support environmental sustainability and growth, from planting trees and caring for local habitats, to cultivating crop gardens and harvesting! Volunteers also enjoy a home grown lunch made from food grown right on the farm! Harvests are often used to support the local community, and are also utilized to teach students of all ages about sustainable farming and farm to table processes.

Teach kids important new skills and assist with their enrichment through Camp Wonder!
Each volunteer is assigned an enrichment class for the semester. Every Friday, you’ll help run the class along with the elementary school teacher. To best help the teachers with these classes, volunteers are required to commit to volunteering each Friday for the duration of the semester.

Learn how to have a positive environmental impact by helping grow fresh fruits and vegetables at Vine & Fig! You might learn how to make tortillas from scratch, how to plant different types of gardens, or how to best use your local environment for growing plants. Vine & Fig also strives to empower people who are marginalized or impoverished, and by volunteering, you will be helping them achieve this goal.

The Elkton Food Bank is an amazing opportunity to support those in need locally, while also forming relationships with the other, amazing volunteers from the community. The Food Bank is a judgment free space that provides a variety of nutritious food to anyone who may need it. Volunteers work both inside and outside to pack food together into shopping carts, and then load food into cars.

Open Doors combats homelessness as a low barrier, last resort shelter for those who may not qualify for services at other locations. This program was developed to improve the quality of life of those experiencing homelessness by providing a weekly laundry service to guests at Open Doors, ensuring regular access to fresh, clean clothes.

The Vine & Fig Educational Outreach Program seeks to educate and empower local youth around food, gardening, and nature. These volunteer opportunities include a range of activities such as local Elementary school trail clean-ups, creating & maintaining gardens, and facilitating educational activities for the local youth.
